A 35-year-old police officer who was in charge of the Chikukwa police base in Chimanimani has appeared in court facing a murder charge after a man he allegedly assaulted later died in hospital.
The accused, Bhekimpilo Ncube, is alleged to have attacked 34-year-old Godman Mtimba during an incident that occurred on February 26 at Chikukwa Business Centre.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the events leading to the alleged offence began on February 25 when Ncube reportedly received information that the now-deceased had been behaving violently in the area.
"On February 26, the now-deceased was apprehended and taken to Chikukwa Business Centre, where the accused person was drinking beer," the authority said.
Prosecutors allege that Ncube attempted to remove Mtimba's beard using a knife during the encounter.
"The accused person attempted to remove the suspect's beard using a knife. He sliced the now-deceased on the chin and cheek, inflicting injuries before rushing him to Mutambara Hospital, where he died," the prosecution said.
Authorities said Ncube later surrendered himself to police after the victim was pronounced dead.
He remains in custody awaiting further court proceedings as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
