Sonja Louise Madzikanda, the estranged wife of controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, and her mother, Thabitha Madzikanda, appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court on Wednesday facing charges of cyberbullying and harassment.
The two were remanded in custody to Thursday for a bail hearing after prosecutors indicated they would oppose their release.
According to the State, Sonja and Thabitha are being charged with "cyber-bullying and harassment" as defined under Section 164B of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
Thabitha Madzikanda, 62, who works as a senior manager in compliance at FBC Bank, was arrested on May 18, while Sonja was arrested a day earlier.
Prosecutors told the court that the matter involves "Artificial Intelligence-generated photographs and videos which can be produced as exhibits." The State further indicated that several witnesses are expected to testify against the accused.
Investigations are expected to conclude by June 3, with four witnesses lined up to testify in the case. Detective Sergeant Chimera has been named as the investigating officer.
Prior to their court appearance, Sonja had claimed that she was arrested over allegations of stealing Chivayo's mobile phone and denying him access to his children.
Reports had also linked her mother to the matter, alleging disputes over attempts to alter trust fund administration arrangements and remove Chivayo as a signatory.
However, neither Sonja nor her mother faced charges related to those allegations during Wednesday's proceedings.
The matter is being presided over by magistrate Nyaradzo Manokore, with the accused expected back in court on Thursday for a ruling on bail.
