A motorist suspected of fleeing from two separate accident scenes in which two people died has been arrested by police.

According to authorities, Zivai Jembere was captured on video allegedly speeding away from an accident scene on May 3 at around 1:30am.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Simon Vengai Muzenda Road and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.

Police said Jembere was driving a Honda Fit, registration number ADJ 1907, while the other driver, Frankson Simbarashe Mudzingwa, was driving a black Honda Fit, registration number AHC 9230.

Investigations revealed that Jembere's vehicle allegedly collided with Mudzingwa's car, causing it to overturn several times before landing back on its wheels.

Police said Jembere failed to stop after the collision.

A passenger in Mudzingwa's vehicle, Andrew Tawanda Mbaya, sustained serious injuries and later died while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital eight days after the accident.

Following Jembere's arrest, police said investigations also linked him to another fatal road accident in Murehwa in January this year, where another victim reportedly died.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest.

"Police arrested a motorist who was involved in road traffic accidents and failed to stop. We continue to urge motorists to stop when involved in a road traffic accident," said Insp Chakanza.

He added that police were reinforcing warnings previously issued by Harare provincial police commander Maxwell Chikunguru, who said mushikashika drivers would be required to account for every dent on their vehicles, particularly those impounded by authorities.

"A number of mushikashika drivers have been failing to stop when involved in road traffic accidents, and we continue to warn such drivers to obey road rules and regulations," said Insp Chakanza.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating another hit-and-run accident that occurred on May 18 at the 148-kilometre peg along the Harare–Mutare Road.

Authorities said a 21-year-old man was struck by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the road. He sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.
