Scottland brace for Kaizer Chiefs test

Defending Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions Scottland believe they are ready to upset South African giants Kaizer Chiefs when the two sides meet in the third edition of the Toyota Cup on Sunday.

The Mabvuku-based club departed for South Africa on Saturday morning ahead of the eagerly anticipated pre-season fixture at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg.

Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30pm, with stadium gates opening at 9am.

The Toyota Cup has become Kaizer Chiefs' flagship annual pre-season event, combining top-class football with entertainment and fan engagement.

Scottland head coach Norman Mapeza expressed confidence that his side is well prepared to give Amakhosi a stern test.

"We are fully prepared. We are not coming from pre-season and we have played more than 20 of our league games, which means that in terms of match fitness we are okay," said Mapeza.

"Our opponents are coming from the off-season, so maybe we might have a slight edge over them in terms of fitness."

Scottland's squad includes former Kaizer Chiefs stars Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat, while on-loan defender Emmanuel Jalai, from Durban City, adds further strength to the team.

The Zimbabwean champions have enjoyed an impressive domestic campaign, sitting at the top of the league table with 52 points from 24 matches, having suffered just two defeats while recording 15 victories.

Beyond Sunday's contest, Scottland view the Toyota Cup as an important test ahead of their CAF Champions League campaign, which begins in the coming weeks.

"This cup competition will give us a true reflection of where exactly we stand in terms of being ready for the Champions League," Mapeza said.

"The Champions League is a different ball game altogether; we need to be at our best and the cup will show us where we stand… but we will not pressure the boys, they just need to go and compete.

"Champions League will not be easy. Just look at the quality of the Moroccan sides, Algeria and an Egyptian side that had five players from Al Ahly SC—that is the quality that we will meet in the competition.

"We will go and simply compete but we will not place ourselves under unnecessary pressure."

Mapeza said he would travel with an expanded squad, allowing him to rotate players and give valuable minutes to those who have featured less regularly this season.

The match also presents an opportunity for Scottland's emerging players to showcase their talent against one of Africa's biggest clubs in front of a wider audience.

Midfielder Gareth Madhake, however, will miss the encounter as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury, although he has resumed light training.

"From what I heard, they might use two teams so we also need to use two teams," Mapeza said.

"Further, we never know what might happen next week, maybe the PSL might instruct us to play Dynamos midweek, which means that we have to be careful how we use our players.

"But above everything, it is a game of football and everything comes down to preparation. It is a huge honour for us to be invited and we grab the opportunity with both hands.

"I hope that in the coming editions, some of the local clubs will also be invited because it is good for us."

The Toyota Cup was launched in 2024, when Kaizer Chiefs hosted Young Africans of Tanzania in Bloemfontein. Last year, the Soweto giants faced Ghana's Asante Kotoko in Durban.

Both previous editions featured legends' matches as curtain-raisers, a tradition that will continue in this year's tournament.
