Disgraced IDAC cabal leader asks to resign – with immediate effect

Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andrea Johnson has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa and National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi's successor, Andy Mothibi, to release her from her duties with immediate effect.

In a resignation letter, Johnson requested that her contractual three-month notice period be waived, arguing that an immediate departure would be in the best interests of both the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and IDAC.

"Your Excellency and NDPP, I am humbly requesting you to consider my application for resignation. Whilst my contract requires a three-month notice period, I would request both your considerations of an immediate release from office, thereby waiving the notice period," Johnson wrote.

"This in effect would mean that, by agreement, I vacate my office within 24 hours… The NPA and IDAC must and will always come first and I believe that this resignation in the manner proposed would serve the institutions and the country best."

Johnson declined to comment on the contents of the letter.

Her request to resign comes after Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Mothibi reportedly met with her to discuss concerns arising from testimony presented before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Evidence before the commission allegedly claimed that Johnson improperly forwarded the contents of an assault docket involving Crime Intelligence senior official Feroz Khan to him in 2018.

The testimony also raised broader questions about IDAC's handling of the prosecution of Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and several other officials.

Neither the Presidency nor the National Prosecuting Authority had publicly commented on Johnson's resignation request at the time of publication.
