Acting Chief Wasi Nomhle Ngwenya has died at the age of 65 following a long illness, authorities in Mangwe District have confirmed.

Mangwe District Development Coordinator Matilda Mlotshwa confirmed that the acting chief died at Plumtree District Hospital on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

"It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing on of Acting Chief Wasi, Nomhle Ngwenya, who passed away yesterday (Tuesday), 11 August 2026, at Plumtree District Hospital after a long illness. She was 65 years old," Mlotshwa said in a statement.

Ngwenya was appointed acting chief on 23 November 2022 following the death of the substantive Chief Wasi, Ashel Wasi Ndiweni, who died on 4 November 2021.

Following her death, the family gathered at her residence at 1001 Mathendele in Plumtree, with plans to proceed to her rural home.

Mlotshwa said further details regarding the funeral and burial arrangements would be announced in due course.

A source also indicated that a substantive chief has since been appointed to lead the Wasi chieftainship, although the official installation ceremony is yet to take place.

The Wasi chieftainship covers areas including Zimnyama, Macingwane and part of Empandeni.

Ngwenya's death comes as the community prepares to bid farewell to a traditional leader who served in the acting position for nearly four years following the death of Chief Ashel Wasi Ndiweni.
