Comedian beats Hichilema ally for Matero parliamentary seat

Resolute Party parliamentary candidate and comedian and artist Patrick Mwamba Salubusa, popularly known as Saulos, has won the Matero parliamentary seat in Zambia’s 2026 General Election.

Salubusa defeated United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate and Lusaka businessman Alexander Sakala in a closely watched contest.

His victory represents another parliamentary gain for the opposition NRPUP and Resolute Party in Lusaka, amid reported opposition victories in constituencies across the country.

Salubusa, who is known for his work in comedy and the arts, will now enter Parliament after securing the Matero seat.

The contest attracted considerable attention, with supporters framing it as a battle between wealth and humility. Salubusa’s campaign was portrayed as one centred on his accessibility and connection with ordinary residents, while Sakala entered the race as a prominent businessman.

Supporters said Matero voters ultimately favoured Salubusa, whom they described as a humble candidate with a strong connection to the community.

The result adds to the growing political profile of Salubusa, whose career in entertainment has given him a public platform beyond conventional politics.

Zambians went to the polls on August 13, 2026, to elect the President, Members of Parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and councillors.

The Matero result is expected to be closely watched as the final parliamentary picture takes shape and parties assess their performance in Lusaka and across the country.
