Boy killed as buses race for passengers

A six-year-old boy was killed after he was allegedly run over by a Phils and Pats bus near Elephant Lodge in Murambinda on Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred at around 5am, approximately 4km from Murambinda along the Chivhu-Nyazura Highway.
The boy, identified as Irvine Muzerengwa, was reportedly waiting with his uncle, Johna Chivhima, and two older girls for a bus travelling to Harare when the tragedy occurred.
According to Chivhima, a Timboon bus arrived and stopped to pick them up. He was loading their luggage into the bus's luggage compartment when a Phils and Pats bus stopped behind it.
Chivhima said the situation changed when the driver of the Phils and Pats bus allegedly noticed another Timboon bus approaching from behind.
"After seeing another Timboon bus approaching from behind, the Phils and Pats driver suddenly took off to get ahead of it and drove to the left of the parked Timboon bus we were about to board. That is where the children were standing," he said.
Chivhima said he moved closer to the parked Timboon bus to avoid being hit but only realised that Irvine had been run over after one of the girls alerted him.
The Phils and Pats bus reportedly continued with its journey and the driver was only alerted to the accident about 3km from the scene. It is understood that the driver may not have immediately realised that the child had been struck.
Police attended the scene and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are expected to continue.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment.
The buses operating along the Murambinda-Harare route via Chivhu are reportedly known to compete for passengers, with drivers sometimes racing to reach waiting travellers ahead of competing operators.
Chivhima said Irvine had not initially been expected to travel to Harare but insisted on accompanying his uncle and the two girls after learning that they were making the trip.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident remain under investigation.
