Zimbabwe, Kyrgyzstan deepen ties ahead of UN Security Council tenure

ZIMBABWE and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to strengthen cooperation as fellow incoming non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, using their inaugural political consultations in Bishkek to lay the foundation for closer bilateral ties.

The consultations, the first between the two countries, were co-chaired by Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Ambassador Albert Chimbindi and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic.

With both countries set to serve on the Security Council during the 2027–2028 term, the talks provided an opportunity to explore closer coordination on matters before the council, particularly international peace and security, while respecting their respective national positions and priorities.

The two sides also reviewed the state of bilateral relations, including political cooperation, trade and investment, economic ties and people-to-people exchanges.

They expressed interest in strengthening institutional frameworks and identifying new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Zimbabwe and Kyrgyzstan reaffirmed their commitment to greater coordination within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms, while exchanging views on regional and international security developments affecting their respective regions.

The two countries also explored opportunities to deepen cooperation between Africa and Central Asia, highlighting the importance of South-South cooperation, development partnerships and stronger dialogue between the two regions.

The inaugural consultations reaffirmed the two countries' interest in expanding bilateral relations into new areas, with both sides stressing the importance of regular political dialogue to advance cooperation and coordinate positions at the multilateral level.
