Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi is reportedly facing financial difficulties after his wife, Barbra Hernandez, allegedly sold properties worth more than US$2 million and disappeared, according to TellZim News.

The publication, citing sources, reported that Mzembi's financial troubles began after he went into self-exile following the November 2017 ouster of former President Robert Mugabe, alongside other members of the Generation 40 faction.

Sources claimed that during his absence, properties belonging to Mzembi were disposed of, leaving him with limited assets.

Mzembi is now reportedly staying at the Harare home of his nephew, Amiel Matindike. The Matindike family, who are related to the prominent Zvobgo family, are also said to have supported Mzembi during his imprisonment.

His recent public appearances have fuelled speculation about his financial circumstances, with social media users noting that he has been seen wearing the same distinctive purple suit at the Chevron Hotel during his recent trial and later at the funeral of Sekuru Tinos Jesmiel Rushwaya, the father of Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Martin Rushwaya.

However, Mzembi did not confirm the claims when approached by TellZim News, instead responding sarcastically to the reported US$2 million figure.

"US$2 million yoga here? Just US$2 million?" he reportedly said.

He added: "Haa makuhwa ayo asi chero vakatora kuti vakatora nenjere here? These are just mere rumours, but even if it's true, did they take all the brick and mortar and my brains?"

Asked how Hernandez could have accessed properties allegedly jointly owned by the couple, Mzembi suggested that she may have disposed of assets belonging to her.

"Is anyone complaining that she sold her own properties? Haven't I complained as a co-owner, as you say? There is nothing I have confirmed here. I have my own stock of assets, and I have not complained to anyone," he said.

Despite Mzembi's response, sources cited by the publication maintained that he had been left with little in terms of property and other assets.

Meanwhile, Mzembi is reportedly seeking to revive his political career by rejoining ZANU PF. His application for readmission has reportedly been placed before the party's Provincial Executive Council.

Sources further claimed that Mzembi is seeking to rebuild ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who allegedly promised him a vehicle and a farm. He is also reportedly expected to visit Mnangagwa's Pricabe Farm.

The claims about Mzembi's finances and the alleged property sales have not been independently verified.
