HARARE - Citizens Against Economic Sanctions (CAES) has expressed shock and sadness following the death of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo in a helicopter crash, describing his passing as a major loss to both Zimbabwe and Zanu PF.
Chivayo, 43, reportedly died alongside his wife, Lucy "Lulu" Muteke, and four other passengers when a helicopter crashed in Marondera Rural, Mashonaland East, at around 5pm on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed there were no survivors.
CAES chairman Ellison Muchenje, popularly known as Commander Samuriwo, said the organisation was deeply saddened by the tragedy.
"We are shocked by Sir Wicknell's death. It is a loss to both the nation and our party, Zanu PF," said Muchenje.
Born in Chivhu, Chivayo rose from humble beginnings to become one of Zimbabwe's most well-known businessmen. Raised in the Gandami area, he lost his father at a young age and left school during his teenage years before entering the world of business.
He later established Intratrek Zimbabwe, an engineering and energy company associated with major infrastructure projects, including the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project.
Beyond his business ventures, Chivayo gained prominence through philanthropic activities, sponsorship of sporting and entertainment events, and support for various public figures. He was also widely known for his extravagant lifestyle and high-profile donations to musicians, church leaders and sports personalities.
His business career, however, attracted significant public attention and scrutiny. Chivayo was linked to legal disputes surrounding the Gwanda Solar Project and frequently faced questions regarding his business dealings and close associations with influential political figures. He consistently denied wrongdoing and was acquitted in a fraud-related case connected to the solar power project.
In the period leading up to his death, Chivayo remained active in business and public engagements both within and outside Zimbabwe.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, business figures, sporting personalities and members of the entertainment industry across Zimbabwe and the wider region.
