2 fined for smuggling Ethiopians

TWO men who assisted 13 Ethiopian migrants to illegally enter the country were yesterday each fined $250 or 50 days in prison.
The Ethiopians were arrested in Filabusi on Tuesday.
They caused a scene in court on Wednesday when they wailed, claiming they were hungry.
Edmore Murumika, 26, and Leon Tom, 28, both from Karoi, pleaded guilty to assisting illegal immigrants before Gwanda magistrate, Willard Maphios Moyo.
Prosecutor Takunda Mafudze said the pair was hired by the Ethiopians to transport them to Beitbridge where they intended to travel to South Africa.
Murumika and Tom transported them in a Toyota Granvia and were arrested together with their passengers.
On Tuesday at around 3AM they were intercepted at Skuta Business Centre enroute to Beitbridge.
The Ethiopians allegedly failed to produce passports or permits.
The Ethiopian illegal immigrants, Baleka Mekore Libayo, 25, Erimeyas Tasfay Moloro, 23, Fichgo Erusulo Bunetas, 23, Abera Zalake Girema, 22, Salamu Ashebo Mikoree, 23, Adino Abainu Erisano, 20, Tsgaye Habtamu Shucaro (24), two juveniles, 16 and 17, Tedele Detamo Sadamo, 24, Dawet Ersesano Sasi, 20, and Terekas Dahala Sadoro, 25, were not asked to plead to charges of illegally entering Zimbabwe.
They were remanded in custody to March 30.
