A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted of stealing railway property, in violation of the Railways Act. Edison Chidanzenzi was found guilty when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo.
The case was brought to court by the state, represented by Sharelight Ncube from the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), Security Camp, Harare. Prosecutor Nomsa Kangara outlined the details of the crime, which occurred on February 15 of this year.
According to the prosecutor, Chidanzenzi went to the NRZ premises at the NCC Repair Siding area, where he stole several railway components, including four coach screws, one wagon pin, one wagon brake block, and three wagon offcuts. Ncube, a security official at NRZ, reportedly spotted Chidanzenzi in the act.
Upon his arrest, Chidanzenzi was found in possession of the stolen NRZ property. He was subsequently escorted to the police for further management, leading to the charges being brought against him.
The court, having considered the evidence, sentenced Chidanzenzi to a decade in jail, underscoring the seriousness of theft from railway operations and the need for deterrent measures against such crimes.
