Heads of government departments are holding a two-day workshop to share information on the measures that have been taken to prevent HIV and AIDS in the public service.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Ray Ndhukula, applauded the support that government has given to the country's HIV and AIDS support programmes.

"The public sector plays a role in the multi sectoral response to HIV and AIDS in reducing stigma," he said.

The forum also noted that while most countries continue to rely entirely on donor funding for their HIV and AIDS programmes, Zimbabwe gets 30 percent of its funding from local resources although the cut in the civil service has reduced the nation's revenue base.

The Zimbabwean government's commitment to combating HIV and AIDS has been supported by an AIDS levy which has raised over US$40 million and helped procure anti-retroviral drugs for over 500 000 people.
