POLICE have launched a manhunt for a Chinhoyi man, Tinashe Zhengeni who is on the run after 225 rounds of ammunition were discovered at his residence on Tuesday.

This comes amid an increase in reported armed robberies around the country where live ammunition is being used.

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the Chinhoyi incident to the Daily News on Sunday and appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to Zhengeni's arrest to alert them.

"We received a tip-off that there was a suspect with two fire arms an AK 47 and an FN at his apartment in Ruvimbo, Phase 2, Chinhoyi. We sent our team from CID, Canine and Support Unit there.

"When our team got there they discovered that the suspect was a tenant at the residence and had been staying there for a year now. We did not discover the guns but 225 rounds of ammunition which were in a track bottom," said Nyathi.

The police spokesperson added that the ammunition is now being held as evidence. "We are yet to arrest the suspect and appeal to members of the public to give us any information that may assist to locate him and bring him to book," Nyathi said.

He warned members of the public in illegal possession of firearms, adding that offenders would face the wrath of the law.

"It is an offence under the Firearms Act to possess ammunition without a licence and those found on the wrong side of the law will be prosecuted. We are concerned about such illegal possessions especially with more incidences of armed robberies in the country," said Nyathi.
