A BULAWAYO man yesterday dragged his son to the maintenance courts to force him to pay school fees for his daughter.
Themba Hwalima told the court that he was failing to reach an agreement with his son Mduduzi concerning the education of his child. He told magistrate Evelyn Mbeure that Mduduzi had no excuse for not paying his four-year-old granddaughter's school fees because Mduduzi had been educated at top-notch schools.
"My granddaughter is an intelligent girl who should not be prejudiced because her father can't make simple decisions," said an emotional Hwalima.
"I don't see how he would fail to pay fees for his child because I educated him to the best of my abilities. Now he should do the same for his child."
Hwalima pleaded with Mbeure to grant him his claim of $150.
He said he needed the money for his granddaughter's school fees, adding: "I will meet all the other expenses for her." Hwalima said his granddaughter's fees were pegged at $176 a month for pre-school and she would be going to primary school next year
Mduduzi offered to pay $80 as child support.
"I'm studying with Unisa and I'm left with two modules that I've to pay off to complete my degree. I've rent and a loan that I finish paying off in a year at $104 monthly. I can only afford $80," he said.
Hwalima insisted on $100 saying that his son had no wife so he could at least pay that much.
Mbeure ordered Mduduzi to pay $100 towards the upkeep of his child.
