A BULAWAYO woman was viciously attacked by a mob after she was caught trying to rob another woman who she had hit with a brick on the back of the head, a court heard.
Pretty Ncube, 34, of Emganwini suburb allegedly tried to rob Loicy Chitupa, 36, of Nketa suburb. She pleaded guilty to attempted robbery before Magistrate Themba Chimiso who sentenced her to 18 months imprisonment.
She will, however, serve 12 months after Chimiso suspended six months on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years. Ncube told the court that she committed the offence because she was desperate.
"This is the first time I have committed such an offence. It was never my intention to rob her but I was desperate. My husband left me with nothing and I have no other means to survive," said Ncube.
The court heard that Ncube was attacked by the mob after Chitupa screamed for help during the attempted robbery.
Prosecuting, Mitchell Chiboiwa told the court that on November 6, 2015 at Nketa suburb, Chitupa met Ncube who had just disembarked from a kombi, carrying a plastic bag.
"Accused person then hit complainant with a brick on the back of the head and grabbed complainant's handbag," said Chiboiwa.
"Accused failed to pick up the handbag and the complainant screamed for help. She tried to escape but was apprehended by a mob. Nothing was stolen," she added.
