Woman drags Econet to court over 30 cents

A Harare woman who wants to bring a tele communications firm to account over alleged deceptive marketing of its products has temporarily shelved her one woman demonstration as she says thousands of people want to join her.
Maxine Mabuda says she will not rest until she gets justice from the time she dragged local tele communications company Econet Wireless to court on allegations of duping her through deceptive marketing.
In her court challenge lodged at the High Court she seeks US$50 000 in compensation for damages.
She claims the mobile company through an advertising gimmick misrepresented that for a 30 cents Whatsapp bundle one can enjoy services for a full day including Whatsapp calls when in actual fact the bundle is only worth 20 mega bytes of data.
Mabuda had successfully obtained authority to demonstrate this Friday by the police but says she has since withdrawn her application as more people have expressed interest to join her as they claim they were also short changed.
It is not clear though how she arrived at the US$50 000 claim.
Previous court rulings have castigated lawyers for ill advising their clients to claim ridiculous amounts which are not commensurate with the alleged damages suffered.
The matter is now before the courts and it waits to be seen whether or not Maxine Mabuda wins her legal battle for justice.
