A SUSPECTED bogus Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority agent appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with defrauding Warren Park residents of various amounts of money he collected as part payment for supply of prepaid electricity meters.
Hillary Meki was granted $50 bail by Harare magistrate Barbara Chimboza, who remanded him to August 3, pending a statement from the power utility.
Meki is facing three counts after defrauding Phildah Mateneke, Tendai Tawani and Annah Jacob.
It is the State's case that sometime in December last year, Mateneke approached Meki claiming to be a Zesa agent tasked with fitting prepaid power meters at residents' households.
It is alleged Meki and his alleged accomplice one Augustine received $250 for the meter and they connected it.
A week later, Zesa officials inspected the meter and took it away, saying it was illegal.
Mateneke then informed Meki who came with his accomplice and fixed another meter before demanding $50 for registration.
The Zesa officials allegedly came again and removed the meter and gave Mateneke a final warning.
The State alleges that Meki became evasive, prompting Mateneke to file a police report.
Mateneke lost $300.
Using the same modus operandi, sometime in December last year Meki and accomplice defrauded Tawani of $140 after they promised her that they will supply her with a prepaid electricity meter.
Another complainant Jacob lost $300 in October last year after they allegedly misrepresented to her that they were Zesa agents and illegally installed the prepaid meters which were then removed by the Zesa officials.
Linda Gadzikwa appeared for the State.
