Zimbabwe's 700 Megawatt power plant to be completed by April

A 700 Megawatt power generation plant is taking shape in Hwange with phase 1 of the three phases set for completion by April this year.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Engineer Winston Chitando says the Zimbabwe Zhongxin Electrical Energy (ZZEE) Private Limited is a result of Chinese and Zimbabwe cooperation and is an answer to calls for increased investment in the energy and power development sector.
"The ZZEE coal to power project is a project which his Excellency visited mid of last year. It's a project which is in 3 phases. The first and smaller part of the phase is production of 50MW of power which will be achieved by April 2021.
"The second part of the project entails installation of 2 units which will each be producing 135 MW making it a total of 270 MW," said Minister Chitando.
He added that the project, which is scheduled to start in April this year and to be complete early 2023, will add an additional 270 MegaWatts to the grid by early 2023.
"They are also the working on the 3rd project which entails construction of 2 units of 200 MegaWatts each making it an additional 400 MegaWatts by early 2025. In a nutshell we looking at 720 MW of power which is scheduled to be produced from ZZEE."
The development comes as the country continues to make strides in ensuring self-reliance in terms of power generation, and also positioning itself to become a power exporter in the region.
