SOCIETY has been urged to consider the plight of the boy child at a time when an increasing number of them have become victims of sexual violence.
Sexual violence against boys is an emerging problem that has largely been neglected and this was the key message during the boy child rights symposium held in Harare this Wednesday.
"We as boys there are number of challenges we face in society, in the past we have seen that a lot of focus has been directed towards girl child."
The need to create safe havens for victims of abuse also came under the spotlight.
"We feel there are pieces of legislation in our constitution which need to be aligned so that we protect our boys from abuse," said Reverend Nyanhete.
The government welcomed such forums, acknowledging the need to speed up bills which are before the Parliament.
"We applaud the bold step to call for the equal opportunities for boys and girls so that they are protected against all forms of gender based violence. So far, we have two bills which are before the Parliament and there is need for speed," said honourable Nyashanu.
Cases of sexual abuse against boys have been recorded with a 13 year old boy from Harare's Mufakose suburb having been allegedly sodomised by his football coach.
