Edson Mutemaringe, a money changer operating at Engen Garage in Beitbridge, has been remanded out of custody after appearing in court on allegations of trading in counterfeit currency.

Mutemaringe was arrested on Tuesday at about 11pm at Engen Garage and was allegedly found in possession of ZAR300, US$280 and ZWG70, which the State claims were counterfeit.

Beitbridge magistrate Gillian Padzakashambwa remanded Mutemaringe out of custody to August 20, 2026.

The court heard that Mutemaringe is a money changer and was allegedly involved in illegal foreign currency dealings.

The State alleges that Sergeant Chindevhani and Constable Sidakwa received information that Mutemaringe was illegally dealing in foreign currency before proceeding to Engen Garage to conduct surveillance.

During the operation, the officers allegedly observed Mutemaringe soliciting clients, particularly motorists travelling in vehicles with South African registration plates. He was allegedly offering different foreign currencies at negotiable rates.

The State alleges that Chindevhani approached a group of people standing near a South African-registered vehicle and pretended to be part of the group.

Mutemaringe allegedly approached the group, after which Chindevhani negotiated with him to exchange South African rands for United States dollars. The accused allegedly agreed to the transaction.

Mutemaringe was subsequently arrested and searched, resulting in the recovery of ZAR300, US$280 and ZWG70.

The State alleges that the notes were examined and found to be counterfeit.

Mutemaringe is also facing separate charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

Victor Gorejena prosecuted.
