Dorcas Vambe, widely known as Mai Dhuterere, a prominent gospel singer from Waterfalls, Harare, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court facing fraud charges. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has alleged that Vambe, along with her brother Kudakwashe Vambe - who remains at large - defrauded a complainant of USD16,000 in a car sale scam.

According to the NPA, the accused misrepresented to the complainant that they were selling a Toyota Hilux GD6. They further alleged that the complainant's budget would cover not one but two vehicles, and claimed that Mai Dhuterere had a special waiver, purportedly granted "courtesy of the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe for singing for the nation," allowing the vehicles to be imported duty-free.

The complainant reportedly handed over USD16,000 to Vambe, who issued an affidavit committing to deliver the vehicles within two weeks. However, the vehicles were not delivered as promised. Instead, the complainant received a Ford Ranger registered in Botswana and was assured that a second vehicle, a Mercedes Benz C200, would follow.

Complications arose when the complainant drove the Ford Ranger, which was subsequently impounded by police due to the absence of a valid temporary permit.

Dorcas Vambe was granted bail set at USD100 by the Magistrates' Court. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their search for her brother Kudakwashe Vambe.

The case has drawn public attention, given Vambe's status as a celebrated gospel artist. Observers are closely following developments as the judicial process unfolds.
