Two people tragically lost their lives on Thursday morning in a head-on collision between a Toyota Fortuner and a South Africa-bound cross-border bus near Makhado Business Centre, approximately 80 km west of Beitbridge.
The accident occurred along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road when the driver of the Mthethi bus struck a stray donkey, causing the vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane. This resulted in a collision with the Toyota Fortuner, which was heading towards Gwanda.
The two occupants of the Fortuner, whose identities have not been disclosed, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the bus, whose injuries are not life-threatening, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Although police have yet to release full details of the incident, District Medical Officer Dr. Lenos Samhere confirmed that two bodies were received from the crash site. He also stated that the bus driver was receiving medical care at the hospital.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events leading to the fatal accident. Meanwhile, local police have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, especially with the increased traffic expected during the festive season.
