Zimbabwe nurses declare three-day nationwide strike

Nurses across Zimbabwe are set to embark on a nationwide strike from 15 to 17 April 2026 over poor salaries and working conditions, the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) has announced.

In a notice to the Health Services Commission, ZINA said the action follows widespread dissatisfaction among nurses and gives authorities extended time beyond the statutory 48-hour notice to resolve grievances before the next pay cycle.

The planned strike will affect all health facilities countrywide, including central, provincial, district hospitals and clinics, although nurses in intensive and critical care units will remain on duty.

ZINA said the action comes after a wave of demonstrations that began at Sally Mugabe Hospital and spread to other major institutions, including Parirenyatwa Hospital.

The union cited low salaries, rising living costs, transport difficulties, unexplained deductions, lack of payslips, inadequate allowances and staff shortages as key concerns.

It also warned that the current salary structure could leave nurses retiring into poverty, as pensions are based on basic pay.

The nurses said the strike could be called off if government addresses their demands before the deadline.
