Businessman Wicknel Chivayo has launched a scathing response to remarks by prominent lawyer Thabani Mpofu, rejecting claims that he is part of a group controlling the ruling Zanu-PF party.
The exchange follows a social media post by Mpofu in which he alleged that Chivayo, alongside businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei and presidential adviser Paul Tungwarara, had effectively taken over the ruling party, describing Zanu-PF as "a totemless myth; devoid of values and indifferent to the loyalty of its members."
In a strongly worded response, Chivayo dismissed the claims as "absurd," insisting he has no role in controlling party structures and remains an ordinary member.
"I do not control or wish to control the ruling party in any manner whatsoever. I am a businessman… and simply an unapologetic, loyal and ordinary card-carrying member of Zanu-PF," Chivayo said.
He maintained that the party operates under established structures led by Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he described as the sole centre of power within the organisation.
"Zanu-PF is controlled under one centre of power… led by His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa. It is a party with well-established structures such as the Presidium, Politburo and Central Committee, all of which I do not sit in," he said.
Chivayo also took aim at Mpofu personally, expressing disappointment at what he described as a decline in the lawyer's professional standing.
"What is particularly disappointing… is that these assertions are now coming from someone once regarded as one of the most admirable and talented advocates in Zimbabwe," he said.
The businessman further suggested that Mpofu's criticism was driven by frustration linked to opposition politics, referencing his past association with former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa.
Mpofu's initial remarks had framed Chivayo and his associates as wielding significant influence within Zanu-PF, questioning their rise and role within the party.
The public spat highlights growing tensions and competing narratives around influence within Zimbabwe's political landscape, particularly as debate continues over the role of business figures in political processes and party structures.
