Popular Zimbabwean comedian and social media personality Theophilus Gabriel Chigumira, popularly known as "Mai Clifford", has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol after being found more than three times over the legal alcohol limit.

Chigumira (30), of Vahombe Estate in Madokero, Harare, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court heard that he was driving a Mazda Atenza when he was stopped by police during a traffic operation at the Newlands Roundabout along ED Mnangagwa Road.

A breathalyser test revealed that Chigumira had a blood alcohol concentration of 160 milligrams per 100 millilitres, significantly exceeding Zimbabwe's prescribed legal limit.

The court fined him US$200, or the equivalent in ZiG, payable by 30 July 2026, and prohibited him from driving for six months.

"The accused was fined US$200, or its ZiG equivalent, payable by 30 July 2026. He was also prohibited from driving for six months," the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said.

The NPAZ used the case to warn motorists about the dangers of driving while intoxicated, saying impaired driving continues to pose a serious risk to public safety.

"Impaired driving poses a serious threat to the safety of all road users. The Authority will continue to prosecute offenders in line with the law to promote safer roads and prevent avoidable road traffic tragedies," the prosecution authority said.
