Chief Fortune Charumbira, who is also a Senator, has urged women to avoid wearing mini-skirts, arguing that the clothing is inconsistent with Zimbabwean culture and could attract unwanted male attention.
Charumbira made the remarks while addressing people gathered for the installation of Chief Wedza in Zvishavane.
He said traditional values should guide how women dress, adding that mini-skirts were associated with Western culture rather than Zimbabwean traditions.
"Let us leave some of this culture to white people. Our women should dress decently. When ladies wear mini-skirts they attract men and this causes rape cases," said Charumbira.
He also challenged traditional leaders to take an active role in combating drug abuse in their communities.
Charumbira's remarks linked women's clothing to sexual violence, although responsibility for rape lies with perpetrators, regardless of what a victim is wearing.
