Zimbabwe captain Marvelous Nakamba is reportedly close to ending his spell without a club, with Greek Super League side Panetolikos understood to be in advanced negotiations to sign the experienced midfielder.

The 32-year-old has been a free agent since leaving English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at the expiry of his contract earlier this month.

Sources familiar with the negotiations say discussions between Nakamba and the Greek club have progressed positively, with both parties keen to conclude an agreement before the start of the new season.

"Everything is moving in the right direction. The discussions have been positive, and both parties are keen to conclude the deal as soon as possible," a source said.

The source added that Nakamba's priority is to secure regular first-team football after a difficult period marked by limited game time.

"Marvelous wants to get back on the pitch, play regularly and enjoy football again after a difficult period. He had opportunities, but he wanted the right project. At this stage of his career, regular football is more important than anything else. He still believes he has a lot to offer both at club level and for Zimbabwe," the source said.

A return to consistent action is also viewed as crucial for the Warriors skipper ahead of Zimbabwe's campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins with an away fixture against Sierra Leone in September.

The Warriors technical team will be hoping key players, including Nakamba, are match-fit for the qualifiers.

Should the transfer be completed, it would mark another chapter in Nakamba's European career, which has included successful spells with Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands, where he won the Dutch Cup, and Club Brugge in Belgium, where he helped the club secure the Belgian Pro League title.

In England, Nakamba featured for Aston Villa, Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday.

A move to Panetolikos would also see him join Zimbabwe international Tino Kadewere in the Greek top flight. Kadewere currently plays for Aris Thessaloniki, creating the prospect of two Warriors stars competing in the same league during the upcoming season.

An official announcement is expected if the negotiations are successfully concluded.
