Zimbabwe govt moves to regulate e-hailing industry

THE Zimbabwe government has approved a five-month moratorium on the introduction of new regulations governing e-hailing services such as Bolt and InDrive, as it moves to address challenges affecting the sector.

Government acknowledged the growing role of e-hailing platforms in providing affordable and convenient transport while creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

However, concerns have emerged over the regulation and management of the sector, making it difficult for some operators to function smoothly.

During the five-month moratorium, e-hailing companies and drivers will be required to begin developing their own safety standards and operating guidelines.

All businesses operating in the sector will also be required to register for tax with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).

At the end of the moratorium, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is expected to introduce permanent regulations informed by international best practices.

The Government said the ultimate objective was to establish a regulatory framework that ensures e-hailing services are safe, affordable, reliable and accessible to the public while supporting sustainable growth in the sector.
