A Tafara schoolboy died last week after being badly beaten by five schoolmates following a dispute over a cellphone memory card that costs around US$6.
Harare police spokesperson Assistant Inspector James Sabau said three schoolboys had been arrested in connection with the death of Bizwick Gamaliel (16) and two more are being sought.
It is alleged that the five used a log and fists to beat their schoolmate.
"We have apprehended three suspects, one of them a prime suspect. The other two are still on the run," he said.
The suspects are all in Form Three at the same school.
It is alleged that on April 2 at around 2pm, Bizwick was phoned by a schoolmate who said he should come and collect the memory card he had lost in Mabvuku.
According to Bizwick's aunt, Ms Eneres Ngoromi, he met the five near the library.
They hit him on the head with a log and took about US$30 and a cellphone leaving him bleeding and unconscious.
After regaining consciousness, Bizwick staggered into the streets and was helped home by two unnamed girls who recognised him.
Ms Ngoromi said Bizwick came home with a swollen head and was complaining of excruciating pain in one of his arms.
He was admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital on April 3 but was discharged on Tuesday last week because the family failed to raise US$250 for a scan to determine the degree of the injuries.
Bizwick, who is an orphan, was then taken by the Salvation Army to Howard Mission Hospital, which the church runs.
However, his condition deteriorated and he started vomiting blood.
Bizwick died last week on Wednesday.
His body was taken to a Harare mortuary where it is awaiting a post-mortem.
