The European Union ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Aldo Dell'Ariccia was on Monday summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over what the Zimbabwe government has described as undiplomatic behaviour.

In an interview in Harare, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Joey Bimha said he summoned the European Union representative over a recent incident where he is said to have written to the local judges requesting to meet them.

Ambassador Bimha said under the international provisions governing diplomacy, Ambassador Aldo Dell' Ariccia should have approached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting for the meeting through the relevant minister and not engage local judges directly.

Sources say the Ambassador Dell'Ariccia has since apologised for his unbecoming behaviour.

Just after Zimbabwe's harmonised elections, Britain's ambassador to Zimbabwe Deborah Bronnert was caught in a controversy when she lied to Sky News that over 10 000 voters had been turned away in a constituency of 17 000 people.

Recent media reports have pointed fingers at the EU, accusing the bloc of allowing itself to be manipulated by Britain to perpetuate the regime change agenda and sanctions at a time when other European countries are calling for their scrapping.
