The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists secretary-general, Foster Dongozi, yesterday issued a statement congratulating Prof Jonathan Moyo and Supa Mandiwanzira for their appointment as minister and deputy minister of information.
"The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists today congratulates Professor Jonathan Moyo and Mr Supa Mandiwanzira for being appointed Minister and Deputy Minister of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services.
"Minister Moyo has served in that capacity before and with his knowledge of the industry, we welcome his indications that he is willing to engage stakeholders on the way forward," read the statement.
On the appointment of Deputy Minister Mandiwanzira, Dongozi said ZUJ was excited that one of its own had been elevated to that position.
Mandiwanzira is a veteran journalist who started his career at The Business Herald before moving to ZBC. He has also worked as an international correspondent for SABC and Al-Jazeera.
Dongozi added that ZUJ also hailed the election of seven other journalists into Parliament.
"ZUJ is happy that the voices of journalists will also be represented through Minister Webster Shamu, former ZUJ president Kindness Paradza, James Maridadi, Malaki Nkomo, Makhosini Hlongwane, Ladislous Ndoro and Priscillah Misihairabwi-Mushonga," he said.
The union said it would engage the ministry on issues to do with improved remuneration for journalists and media workers, job security, safe working conditions, zero tolerance on sexual harassment particularly of female journalists, commitment to professional, ethical and quality journalism.
