The Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate, in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme and the Rural Electrification Agency, will commission two huge bio-digesters in 2014 to reduce waste management problems in urban areas.
In an interview with ZBC, climate expert Washington Zhakata said plans are at an advanced stage for the commissioning of the bio-digesters in 2014 at the Zimbabwe Remand Prison and Sandringham district.
He said Zimbabweans should adopt the use of biogas in institutions and at homes as it is a clean and environmentally friendly energy that reduces global warming.
Mr Zhakata said 2013 saw the development of the nation's Climate Change Response Strategy that will guide the country in adaptation and mitigation projects.
The most common feedstock for biogas production is animal waste, which is in abundance throughout the country.
More than 200 digesters have been installed in the country with capacity ranging from 3 to 16 cubic metres, from which Zimbabwe can claim carbon credits from the international community.
Biogas is a clean and combustible gas obtained from the digestion or decomposition of organic waste in the absence of oxygen in a bio-digester.
