A police recruit, who had been on training for just one week, has been convicted of stealing a bottle of vodka and cigarettes from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Morris Depot Dry Canteen.

The stolen items were worth $3,20.

Sabriel Nzombe (27) pleaded guilty to theft charges, and blamed his action on "evil spirits".

"I was on a one-week vetting process at ZRP and I had passed most of the tests. Evil spirits ruined everything, making me steal," he  said.

Harare magistrate Ms Victoria Mashamba fined Nzombe US$50 or 30 days in prison.

In addition, a three-month prison term was wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar crime during that period.

The complainant in the matter was ZRP Morris Depot Dry Canteen, represented by Nkiwane Valentine.

Prosecutor Mr Desire Chidanire told the court that on Friday last week, Nzombe entered the ZRP Morris Depot canteen premises and stole a bottle of vodka and 20 cigarettes.

As he was exiting with his loot, Nzombe was apprehended and the stolen items recovered.
