VICE President John Nkomo has been admitted to an exclusive South African hospital with a "life threatening" cancer-related illness, the privately-owned The Mail newspaper reported on Thursday.

News just reaching our desks says that Nkomo, who was reportedly under observation at an exclusive clinic in South Africa, is back in the country and was in his office yesterday.

Webster Shamu, the Minister of Media, Information and Publicity is reported to have confirmed that Nkomo is back in town and was in his office and was holding meetings on national healing.

Regis Chikowore, a spokesman for the Vice President confirmed only that he regularly travels to South Africa for medical check-ups, but insisted he was not briefed on Nkomo's latest trip but Shamu confirmed that Nkomo was in South Africa for medical treatment saying: "Just like anyone else he goes for regular check-ups."

Nkomo, 76, is alleged to have collapsed at his official residence in Harare last weekend before being airlifted to South Africa.

Citing its unnamed sources, The Mail alleges that Nkomo was "weak and unable to walk unaided" when he was admitted at the unnamed private clinic.

Nkomo was not in Parliament on Tuesday when Finance Minister Tendai Biti presented his mid-term budget review.

"At the clinic, his condition was considered to be life-threatening, and doctors advised him to stay in for observation," The Mail said.

It has been reported that Nkomo was diagnosed with some type of cancer in 2008.
