Police have called on the public not to mete out instant punishment to criminal offenders as it is tantamount to taking the law into their own hands.

The concerns follow increasing cases of mob justice that have often resulted in death.

On Monday, a 23-year-old man was attacked by a mob after he stabbed and injured a tout identified as Aaron Muzambi in Harare.

The offender, who later turned victim of public rage, has been identified as Mlondolozi Dube and is battling for life at Parirenyatwa hospital.

Police however said the public should avoid taking the law into their hands by beating up offenders but must exercise citizen's arrest and handover the culprits to law enforcement authorities.

People however argue that in most cases police are slow to react, leading to them taking matters into their own hands.

Over the past few months, crimes of violence have been on the increase but police are yet to compile official figures.
