A Gwanda resident Association member Bekezela Fuzwayo has expressed concerns over the mystery surrounding the resignations that previously rocked the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) saying though he congratulates Qhubani Moyo for being appointed a ZEC commissioner it remains unknown why others resigned.
Moyo a former MDC led by Welshman Ncube's senior official was appointed by President Robert Mugabe into the commission last week.
"While I have no reason not to congratulate Dr Qhubani Moyo for being appointed into the ZEC Commission I have my reservations," said Fuzwayo.
"Mkhululi Nyathi and Justice Simpson Mutambanengwe have up to today not been able to fully explain to us why they resigned from this commission though their short reasons why they resigned were simple that they claimed that it was not workable in the commission which they described as unfit to conduct democratic elections in the country."
He said it is known that six ZEC officials have died in the last few years and four of them in what media reported to have been under mysterious circumstances. "Media reports indicate that the four who died "mysteriously" had been on record questioning some happenings in the commission," said Fuzwayo.
"I know Qhubani to be a very principled man and ask myself question if he has taken time to consider Mkhululi Nyathi and Justice Simpson Mutambanengwe's real reasons behind their quitting the commission?," he said.
"Qhubani is on record for being one of the people who strongly complained about the impartiality of ZEC in running elections and is himself a victim of ZEC's election rigging mechanisms."
He said question arises, is Qhubani going into that ZEC commission hoping to get there and individually turn around the operations of this body that has over the years unfairly decided the fortunes of this country.
"The country is already preparing for the make or break 2018 elections where the 35 years ruling party is certainly bound to get its real test if not exit," he said.
"It is fact that the party will not go into this battle hands down and its already drawing daggas now. ZEC which has been in years been identified as one of the main arms that have been used by ZANU PF to remain in power will certainly once again certainly come to use and one maybe tempted to believe that the redesigning of the commission are early preparations."
Fuzwayo asked if Moyo indeed is now prepared to be part of this mechanism? "One would have expected all democracy loving persons to resist being party to bodies like ZEC at this stage until a more even electoral ground is established and a credible IEC is set up in place of ZEC which has been found hand in cookie jar more often than not," he said.
