MDC national chairman Joubert Mudzumwe had the court in stitches yesterday when he said he would rather fall in love with a crocodile than his ex-wife.

She took him to court on charges of assault and attempted rape.

Mudzumwe is denying the allegations against him saying they were trumped up.

The MDC official, who is now testifying in his defence, described his ex-wife Lydia Chimbare (33) as a cruel woman.

"It's a fabricated story. I regret ever falling in love with such a cruel woman," Mudzumwe told presiding magistrate Ms Jackie Munyonga.

"I am so touched your worship, I am actually regretting ever loving this woman. If given a choice to have an affair with a crocodile and this woman, I would have loved the crocodile," he said, drawing laughter from the public gallery.

When asked why he went to Chimbare's place at night, Mudzumwe said he wanted to give her some money and uniforms for their daughter.

Mudzumwe said he went to his ex-wife's place in the company of another woman because he knew that if he had gone alone she would pester him to be intimate.

He denied the assault allegations arguing that Chimbabre locked the door, put the keys in her undergarments and asked him to take them from there.

Mudzumwe told the court that they had an affair which ended in 2001 but the woman was pestering him demanding another child with him.

Allegations are that on June 24 this year at around 1am, Mudzumwe went to Chimbare's house accompanied by Beauty who is believed to be his girlfriend.

It is alleged the two teamed up to assault Chimbare.

Further allegations are that after his girlfriend left, Mudzumwe began demanding to be intimate with Chimbare but she turned him down.

Mudzumwe will be back in court on September 9 for judgment.

Mr Oscar Madhume is prosecuting.
