This short note serves to update your good office on the MDC Renewal Team's National Convention. The party is set to hold its Inaugural Convention in August 2015. This Convention shall decide on a) new Party Name b) Party Symbol c) Party Constitution d) Economic Blueprint e) Party Ideology f) Roadmap to 2018. Presently the following processes are on-going:
1. As per our schedule the National Convention Committee led by the National Chairman, Dr Sipepa Nkomo, is set to complete the Provincial Conventions by the 30th of July 2015. So far the committee has convened Provincial Conventions in Harare, Chitungwiza, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo, Midlands North, Midlands South, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West. Tomorrow Sunday, Dr Nkomo and his team are in Johannesburg, South Africa. The committee will complete its programme with Mash Central by the 30th of July 2015.
2. As noted above, the National Convention Committee has the mandate to receive input from the Provinces on the party name, party symbol, party ideology, and the roadmap towards 2018. Further, the Committee is also receiving nominations from the provinces for the national leadership. The nominations to the National Leadership shall be tabled to the Party's National Council before being subjected to a vote by the National Convention. In this regard, the names of the nominees will only be availed to the public after the National Chairman's report has been considered by the National Council ahead of the National Convention.
3. Under the guidance of the National Convention Committee, all the Provinces have elected their new provincial leadership which is now preparing the lists of their delegates and accrediting the same ahead of the National Convention. All our provinces have up to the first week of August to submit to the National Office the lists of their delegates to the National Convention.
4. As per the Convention guidelines each of the 12 provinces is expected to send 600 delegates to the National Convention. Because of logistical problems the Convention Guidelines have waivered the number of delegates from external provinces. Only a few representatives and not the 600 shall attend the Convention. Accordingly, 7 000 delegates are expected to be part of this Inaugural Convention
5. Apart from the work that is being done by the National Convention Committee, the Policy Committee led by the Secretary General Hon Tendai Biti is currently holding policy and constitutional discussions at provincial level. Both the Economic Blueprint and the Party Constitution shall be deliberated by the National Council before being tabled at the National Convention for deliberation and adoption.
6. The party is currently finalizing its list of guests from fraternal Political Parties, embassies, labour, civil society and churches.
7. Everything being equal, the National Congress is set to be held on the last week of August in Harare. The official invites shall be coming to your good offices and we hope you will be able to grace this Great Occasion on the Political Calendar of Zimbabwe.
Kind regards
