The Chinese government has donated vehicles and equipment worth US$2 million to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to enhance wildlife conservation efforts in the country.

The hand over was held at a ceremony held at Hwange National Park by the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Huang Ping.

The equipment includes trucks, off road vehicles, graders, solar chargers, telescopes as well as mosquito nets and will be shared between Hwange and Mana Pools national parks.

It is part of the implementation of the memorandum of understandings (MOUs) recently signed by President Robert Mugabe and his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.

Ambassador Huang said China has seen it fit to assist the country as an expression of goodwill and comes at a time the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has been facing a number of challenges protecting a number of endangered species.

The Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Oppah Muchinguri said the involvement of parks staff, Hwange Rural District Council employees and the community in poaching activities remain a cause for concern and is optimistic that the donation will contribute towards the reduction poaching and illegal trade in wildlife products.

This year, the country experienced severe poaching activities through cyanide poisoning which led to the death of more than 60 elephants at Hwange National Park between September and October.
