The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has blamed indiscipline on the part of motorists for the majority of road accidents and called for a culture of self policing on the road.

TSCZ Managing Director, Mr Obio Chinyere said while the increase in volumes of traffic and the number of drivers have contributed to the high rate of accidents, the major cause of crashes remains indiscipline on the part of motorists.

He called on the travelling public to demand their rights to traffic safety by cautioning reckless drivers and even reporting them to the police.

He said this on the sidelines of the Zvimba South Schools Road Safety Arts Festival held at Kutama College.

Guest of honour at the festival, Mr Andrew Tizora said it is time road safety is considered a need and not a pass time, especially by those who have never witnessed, experienced or been affected by the burden of road carnage.

The Zvimba South Schools Road Safety Arts Festival saw dozens of schools take part in a competition which focussed on road traffic safety.

The competitions were in the form of drama, music and poetry.

The involvement of schools was meant to inculcate a sense of road safety among school children.
