An Inyathi man, 27, died from injuries sustained when he set himself alight in front of one of his girlfriends who had ditched him after learning that he also had another lover. Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the death of Bulisani Bajila of Maqaqeni Village 1. Bajila reportedly committed suicide by setting himself alight on Friday while he was in the company of his girlfriend, Buthenenkosi Ndlovu (27).
"An Inyathi man, Bulisani Bajila, died from wounds he sustained when he set himself alight. Information received is that on 27 July and at about 5.30pm, the now deceased and his girlfriend were in a room at Pauline Bar quarters in Inyathi when an argument ensued after Ndlovu told him that she was aware that he was cheating on her with another girlfriend," said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said Ndlovu then told Bajila that she no longer loved him and wanted out of the affair.
Asst Insp Makonese said Bajila apologised to her but she refused to take it."Bajila then went on to pour two litres of petrol that was meant for use in the generator all over his body, lit a candle and lit himself in the presence of Ndlovu who managed to escape through the window with serious burns on her left ankle," she said.
Asst Insp Makonese said the two were taken to Inyathi District Hospital where Ndlovu was still admitted but was said to be in a stable condition.
"However, because of the seriousness of the burns, Bajila was transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital where he died at about 11pm on the same day," she said.
Asst Insp Makonese said the police were busy carrying out community education awareness campaigns to conscientise members of the public about the need to engage a third party in case of misunderstandings instead of killing each other or committing suicide.
