A 30-year-old woman has been slapped with 4 years in jail for possession of illegal drugs and drug trafficking.

Leanah Chaka pleaded guilty to the charge when she appeared before the Beitbridge Magistrates' Court facing drug trafficking charges, after she was found in possession of unlawful and dangerous drugs.

One year of the sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving her with an effective 3-year imprisonment.

The court heard that on September 18, Chaka boarded a Honda Fit shuttle at Engen Garage in Beitbridge, carrying seven pockets of potatoes, at around 12.30 am.

The following morning, the vehicle was intercepted at Bubi Roadblock along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway.

During a routine search, police officers discovered 17 cobs of dagga concealed inside the potato bags.

The recovered dagga weighed 9.3 kilograms, with an estimated street value of US$930, leading to Chaka's arrest.
