A 45-year-old man from Colleen Bawn in Gwanda district was sentenced to nine-year imprisonment for stealing a stray beast belonging to the State.

Siphosenkosi Gift Khumalo of stand 125 Capital Block, Colleen Bawn where he is employed as a herdsman, pleaded guilty to the stocktheft charge when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate-in-charge Douglas Chikwekwe on Monday.

Prosecutor Mncedisi Dube said on September 24 at around 6pm, Khumalo drove a herd of cattle belonging to his employer Mbonisi Mpala and penned the beasts at his employer's homestead.

Among the herd was one beast belonging to the State which had strayed. The court heard that on the following day, Khumalo slaughtered the beast and sold the meat to villagers.

Police received a tip-off from villagers and when they proceeded to Khumalo's place of abode, they found him preparing meat and arrested him.

Chikwekwe said stocktheft is a serious offence and Khumalo had no lawful right to act in the manner he did.
