Government allocates 200tonnes of rice to Mat South

GOVERNMENT has allocated 200 tonnes of rice to Matabeleland South province in a bid to avert looming hunger.

The consignment is targeted at the most vulnerable groups in the seven districts.

According to ZBC, an estimated 50 000 people comprising the elderly, orphaned and those living with disabilities are expected to benefit from the food consignment.

However, the rice still kept at the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot in Harare awaiting transportation.

In March, the Famine Early Warning System Network (Fewsnet) said the country's acute food situation will remain as production was being hampered by the late start of the rainy season, flooding, and dry spells.

The government safety-net programmes are also ongoing in 21 targeted districts, assisting the most vulnerable and labour, constrained households through the harmonised social cash transfer programme that provides monthly cash distribution of between $10 and $25.
