FARAI Chibvura, 22, could have died when he was stabbed twice in the chest and cheek in a night club fight over a hooker. But the soldier survived, only to die the same night in a hit and run accident while on his way home.
This was heard by Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga during a brief court appearance by Mdudusi Makamu, 21, who was facing assault charges.
Makamu was not asked to plead and the State said it would proceed by way of summons.
Prosecutor Daniel Tafuma told the court that Chibvura, who was based at Thornhill Airbase, died in a hit and run accident after he was attacked by Makamu.
Tafuma said since there was no evidence linking Makamu to the accident , the State would proceed by way of summons. He said on May 23 at around 9PM, Chibvura was drinking beer at Main Street Bar, Gweru in the company of Tichaona Maweni and Ernest Muvuti.
He said at around 10PM, Chibvura had a misunderstanding with Makamu over a suspected prostitute and they started fighting.
"Maweni tried to refrain the two from fighting and during the process Makamu grabbed a beer bottle and smashed it on the ground. He remained with a piece of the bottle in his hand which he used to stab Chibvura once in the cheek," said Tafuma.
He said Makamu was thrown outside the bar and Chibvura followed him and the two started fighting again.
Tafuma said Makamu then stabbed Chibvura once in the chest with the broken beer bottle.
"Chibvura then left the place and proceeded home. On his way, along Mvuma road, he was hit by a vehicle and died on the spot. The vehicle didn't stop," said Tafuma.
He said Chibvura's body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem and his death was attributed to a road traffic accident that resulted in multiple injuries.
