Cop exposes serious extortion in Zimbabwe police force

09 May 2017 at 18:25hrs | Views
Editor,

As we know and accept that our government is cash strapped and is trying by all means to keep their workforce paid, we as the workforce we know and accept the little salaries we get even if they are way below the poverty datum line. But of that little cash we get, we are being extorted almost all of it as such many junior officers end up resorting to corruption to make ends meet.

It's like we are now paying to keep ourselves employed because if you try to resist you are threatened with unforeseen circumstances.

Imagine a police constable is paid $400 after deductions from Z.R.P subs, pension, medical aid, funeral and legal aid. Then you come to depot, be it in Ntabazinduna or Morris, headed by Senior Assistant Commissioner Taedzerwa  Munyori, he will command you to pay $30 for CGP sports gala, $15 Kuyedza affiliation, $4 provincial fund, $2 station fund and on top of that you are forced to gamble your hard earned $5 in the name of buying raffle tickets for CGP sports gala.

There is again a 5 meter cheap quality cloth which every member is forced to buy for $50. That cloth is just printed police badges all over and if you rate it with other cloths from different fabric shops, it mustn't exceed $10 but we are forced to buy it for $50.

Women are given tracksuits from Kuyedza as benefits but their husbands in the police are forced to pay for them.

For example in depot we are way over a thousand officers under his command that is he makes more than $30 000 extorted in the name of sports.

Those who are going to participate in CGPs gala from depot are less than 200 and spend about $5 000 in track suits and kits of cheap quality, where is the rest of the money going to?

Every year we affiliate to Kuyedza but we are not benefiting anything at all. Kuyedza is voluntary on paper but not in practice.

Junior officers residing in police accommodations some of us are forced to pay rent which is a new development which has never happened in the history of police e.g. 5 avenue mess quarters.

There is no one who wishes to hear the complaints of junior officers and if you as a junior officer by any means try to launch a complaint you are victimised to an extent that you will be an example to would be offenders. You will be labelled MDC or ZIMPF and threatened with losing your job.

The issue of Chivavava, Mushonga and others who took $206 600 which is in courts right now comes from the same depot which is under the command of SAC Taedzerwa M. and he is the senior culprit in this matter. Morris depot must be audited also especially by external auditors.

President Mugabe and CGP Chihuri they are known preachers of anti-corruption but this is happening under their nose. I can't say they are ignorant but I wish they take action and come to the rescue of the junior officers.

Thank you,
