Khupe the new hope for MDC-T
07 May 2015 at 09:34hrs | Views
The perennial hash quashing of dissenting voices in the MDC-T camp spells a lot on Morgan Tsvangirai's dictatorial tendencies. The ongoing Thokozani Khupe's persecution does not come as a surprise if one refers back in time, when the royal rumble once saw the ouster of Welshman Ncube, Arthur Mutambara and of late, Tendai Biti to mention just but the biggest victims.
The way business is handled in the so called Zimbabwe's main opposing political party defies logic behind their thrust as a democratic movement. Victor Hugo once said "when dictatorship becomes a fact, revolution becomes a right". As long as Tsvangirai is not ready to listen to his lieutenants and represent people's wishes, MDC-T is certainly guaranteed of splinters periodically.
If Tsvangirai had shown remorse in his approach to intra-party politics then his continued clinging to power could somehow be justified. However, his indecorous tact of making his word supreme continues to bear revolutions in the MDC-T.
It is fool hard for Tsvangirai to pay a deaf ear to the learned voices of reason by his lieutenants who obviously are better qualified and charismatic than him. The man is on the record of boasting about having the keys to unlock the economy. It is in the same manner that he brags about dangling the fate of MDC T with his finger tips. It has grown to be his entity after all, given that it is known as MDC Tsvangirai.
His wishes and word have literary become supreme at the end of the day, despite being unreasonable and suicidal as evidenced by his rejection to participate in elections. The same subject cost him the Ncube faction in 2005 when he objected to participating in senatorial elections. This time around Khupe's political career is in limbo for questioning Tsvangirai's election boycott strategy.
Khupe is a better representation of democracy than Tsvangirai given the circumstances underlying her persecution. Clearly Madam Khupe sees no future in boycotting the by-elections as there is no evidence what so ever pointing to malfunction of Zimbabwe's electoral processes. It's a tried and tested phenomenon that bickering without substantive and empirical facts is cheap politicking and draws just but empathy which does not translate to votes at the end of the day.
Hopefully Madam Khupe has the guts equivalent to her brains to either leave or take over the Tsvangirai camp given her reasonable following in Matebeleland which happens to be the stronghold of MDC-T.
Tsvangirai's tired campaign tools of mass actions and boycotts are anti development and irresponsible altogether. All he has ever known is political agitation and of late he has come out of the cocoons promising to intensify the crisis in Zimbabwe.
Better living conditions and welfare continues at the apex of responsible voters, Mr Tsvangirai. Give us better politics not primitive antics which are anti people. Denial of these basic needs is simply undoing the effort of serving people. If one cannot represent people's interests, whose agenda are you pushing?
It is indeed time up for selfish and personal ambitions. Can Tsvangirai be the face for democratic change by stepping aside so that we try fresh, democratic and intelligent personalities to lead the opposition?
