Former Zimbabwe Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari could make a return to the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) after being linked with a move to football giants Kaizer Chiefs.
The 33-year-old dreadlocked striker is currently a free agent after his contract with relegated English Championship (Division One) side Portsmouth expired at the end of the season.
According to a leading South African football publication Soccer-Laduma, Mwaruwari is on the Kaizer Chiefs radar.
"The 33-year-old Zimbabwean, who started his career at Jomo Cosmos, has reached the end of his contract with Pompey (Portsmouth) and is seriously considering a return to South Africa, this time with PSL giants Amakhosi.
"Mwaruwari was previously linked with a move back to Jomo Cosmos, but the club's relegation to the National First Division put a halt to that.
"He's now looking at joining Chiefs to complete his illustrious career.
"Sources close to the club say it's a match made in heaven, but revealed that talks are still in their infancy stages," reported Soccer-Laduma yesterday.
Mwaruwari is on record saying that he could make a return to the South African Premiership as long as he was given the right offer.
"In football you cannot close doors. I might wake up and join Dynamos or Highlanders or end up in South Africa depending on which team comes up with the best offer.
"At the moment I haven't decided which move, I will decide depending on the offers," said Mwaruwari after the signing of a memorandum of agreement between GreenCard Medical Aid Society and the Benjani Mwaruwari Foundation ahead of this Saturday's testimonial match.
Kaizer Chiefs is also home to national team players Willard Katsande, Tinashe Nengomasha, who has permanent residency in South Africa, Zhaimu Jambo, Amidu Abbas, Lincoln Zvasiya and Thomas Sweswe.
Mwaruwari, who retired from international football in October 2010, is set to feature for the Warriors for the last time in his highly-publicised testimonial match set for the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.
